Information Handling

Eileen Campbell

Benarty Primary, Ballingry
Levels
A and C

Two separate, but linked studies gathered information for inclusion in a non-computer database (Level A Collecting and Analysing) and to generate pie charts (Level C Collecting and Analysing).

Why was this work undertaken?

The school held a "Health Week" as part of that a survey was undertaken by all classes on - exercise, walking to school, diet and drinking water.

How was it developed?

P1-3 pupils completed the survey through discussion and by a sorting exercise. Graphs were made, giving the children's responses. P4-7 pupils used primary toolkit and compiled a class database in order to make graphs/pie charts.

What was the impact on pupils' learning?

The pupils were able to classify the information through displays. There were opportunities for discussion about the results and also language/maths follow-up work.

What was the impact of teaching strategies?
Through timetabling, the C991 teacher to work with specific classes throughout the school to develop further the children's ICT skills, teachers were able to display and share results.
