A wide range of teaching strategies is possible by using a variety of software and ICT devices.

Why was this work undertaken?

To introduce the children to the use of a scanner in their language work.

Why was this work undertaken?

Language was chosen as the best basis for this work. Initially, whole class instruction was given on how to use the scanner starting with photographs of themselves. Pupils soon began to help each other. The class then moved on to importing the scanned work onto language tasks where they had left spaces for insertion of pictures. We later scanned pictures to use as backgrounds for tasks, scanned homework exercises to which text had to be added.

What was the impact on pupils' learning?

The children learned different ways of using the scanner for written projects and learned that ICT is a tool. To be used in many different ways. They were stimulated into thinking about improving the quality of their content and presentation of writing tasks completed on the PC. It also helped to retain their interest on language topics as they enjoyed working in the media.

What was the impact of teaching strategies?
I enjoyed seeing the children develop their ICT skills. They were beginning to think more about setting out their work before starting. Initially, I taught the lesson as a class then helped out with individuals who had forgotten certain steps by directing them to the Help Cards displayed on the wall. The children worked through a rota system as we have only one scanner. They then moved into the computer suite after saving their photographs.
