PowerPoint presentations were created by the children
working in pairs..
A slide from The Jacobites.
Why was this work undertaken?
As a vehicle for pupils creating and presenting their
knowledge and understanding of topic work undertaken in set topics
as part of the school Environmental Studies programme. At the same
time pupils were enriching and developing their ICT skills.
The work began as an assessment of the topics covered
in Environmental Studies. It later developed into the production of
an integrated resource for other children tackling the same topic
and into a homework resource (web pages).
What was the impact on pupils' learning?
Pupils' learning was enhanced because they were quickly
and fairly easily able to produce satisfying results and an attractive
product. Creating a PowerPoint presentation is an excellent way to
demonstrate mastery of a wide understanding of the topic. Selecting
and summarising and sequencing are valuable skills.
What was the impact of teaching strategies?
These had to be revised to take account of the different
manner of demonstrating knowledge and understanding. Children and
teacher alike found this approach to be motivating, stimulating and
very effective. The best way to learn to make PowerPoint presentations
is to make a PowerPoint presentation! It worked best when they pupils
were placed in pairs and the discussion needed to agree bullet point
entries was invaluable.
