Level A

Why was this work undertaken?

They decided to create a time lapse movie of Pond Scum based on their trip to the Botanic Garden's pond dipping experience.

How was it developed?

First through discussion-how could we learn more about pond scum? We couldn't see it but a microscope attached to a computer could!

What was the impact on pupils' learning?

It consolidated their learning. It made them think more about the benefits of technology; it stimulated their imagination.

What was the impact of teaching strategies?

The impact was immediate - very visual - a challenge for P1 and P2 - but a useful learning tool because they made their own movie

A screen shot from the time lapse movie on Pond Scum.

The pupils added sound clips and were fascinated by the way the microscope detected life on what looked like a collection of mud.

The school visited St. Andrews Botanic Gardens where they were involved in a large number of activities. If you are interested please contact Dr. Alyson Tobin by e-mail at at6@st-andrews.ac.uk
