Music

Jennifer Hughes

Visiting Teacher of Music
Levels B C

A traditional instrument, instruction for which has benefited from employing ICT as a delivery mechanism.

Why was this work undertaken?

The recorder package was written to update a previous scheme, and provide all primary schools with a resource to teach recorder playing in the classroom.

How was it developed?

The recorder package was initially written by a small group of Visiting Music Specialists, with the intention to provide schools with an updated teaching resource. As it was being created I felt it lent itself to a computer-based format. Teachers and pupils would be able to interact with the program to develop their musical ability, while also providing cross-curricular links to acquire skills in ICT.

What was the impact on pupils' learning?
The package has not been distributed to schools yet and has only been used by a small number of teachers and children at an experimental level.

One positive feature of this package is that it focuses the attention of the pupil to one central viewpoint (ie they are all looking at the same screen!), which helps to encourage more accurate playing. Assessing individual pupils development is easier, as the teachers attention is not restricted (by accompanying the players with another instrument or controlling a tape recorder!!) The package can be used in the classroom, where children can sit in a comfortable position with good posture. There is no need for photocopying and music cannot get lost!
Initial feedback has been positive!

What was the impact of teaching strategies?
Teaching strategies can vary depending on the use of the package in the classroom, and the hardware that is available.

Hardware/software requirements and useful linked websites.
The package requires Microsoft PowerPoint.
