Why was this work undertaken?
The origins of both these Critical Activity courses began as a documentary video purchased from Phaidon. This proved to be a very good starting point for pupils providing stimulus for points of discussion. I felt however, that the less able required more support.

It was noted that pupils in general had difficulty in assimilating relevant information and organising their thoughts coherently on paper.

Often the work lacked the depth of insight and thought that is necessary.

How was it developed?

Myself and a member of the Learning Support Department undertook the task of developing the PowerPoint and hard copy support materials.
We used a scanner, PC and PowerPoint software.

What was the impact on pupils' learning?

The course allows pupils to learn at their own pace and is devised to encourage freedom of thought and personal opinion making. Pupils enjoy the freedom to learn at their own pace without feeling that they need to hurry or that they are working to a formula or set plan. It is easy to backtrack and check information when using PowerPoint.

Pupils are able to develop skills in assimilation and organisation of information and are able to use evidence to present their arguments in a convincing form. The materials also attempted to highlight and underline important aspects of artists and designers work.

What was the impact of teaching strategies?
Shorter, sharper lessons which incorporates a variety of teaching approaches can offer a structural backbone and still retain flexibility and allow freedom of thought.
