Perranporth, N. Cornwall The main island is one of a chain stretching back to the cliff. It is exposed at low tide. The flagpole is used by the lifeguard service to pace a red flag at times when it is too dangerous to enter the water. A strong backwash can take bathers out to sea and, in 2005 a sand bank collapsed causing a large surge of water to drag up to 100 bathers into difficulty.
