WILDLIFE
During the 20th century, the UK lost more than 100 plant and animal species, mostly due to loss of habitat.
- Only 3% of farms in the UK are certified organic.
- Marine animals can become entangled in litter, which can lead to suffocation, drowning and death.
- Marine animals can mistake litter for food. Turtles and other creatures are being found dead with their guts full of plastic litter.
- A single teaspoon of soil may support 10 million bacteria and over 2 km of microscopic fungal filaments that recycle nutrients and feed plants. It's a teaspoon of biodiversity.
- Cigarette butts have been found in the stomachs of dolphins, turtles, whales, fish and birds.
- Forests which have been planted for future paper making support fewer different species of living things than ancient woodlands.
