Your school will require a
Named Co-ordinator i.e. a member of staff who is responsible for organising/ facilitating health promotion developments within the school. Please insert the name of your co-ordinator on Registration Form.
The role of the named co-ordinator may be to:
- establish and facilitate the school health group
- initiate and take responsibility for the overall development of the healthy school concept
- work with colleagues, pupils, parents/carers and outside agencies
- co-ordinate self evaluation
- take the lead on developing action plans, stimulating action and gathering evidence
- ensure the school is kept abreast of National/ Fife wide developments in health promotion through attending in-service training sessions/reading related information sent from the HPS development team and communicating this information effectively throughout the school community.
The School Health Working Group
Schools are advised to set up a health promoting school working group to support the named co-ordinator. Smaller schools may consider working with other schools forming small health collectives to work together to jointly develop health promotion.
These groups might include some of the following people:
- A member of the senior management team
- Teaching/ Non-teaching staff
- School Nurse*/ Health Visitor
- Pupils
- Parents/ Carers/ School board/ PTA representatives
- Active School Co-ordinator
- Youth/ Community staff
- Others as appropriate
The main tasks of the group might be to:
- assist in managing the development of health promotion in the school
- support the self evaluation and review process
- contribute to the development of the action plan through facilitating the selection of "statements" / "cards"
- identify and gain commitment from key people in the school and wider community
There are a number of initiatives already dealing with aspects of the health promoting schools which also require the formation of such working groups, e.g. School nutrition Action Groups, Eco schools, travel plans, pupil councils, ethos groups. It may be possible to integrate the health promotion working group function into an existing group’s remit.
Working Group Suggestions
The following is a suggestion of how to amalgamate working groups into your current practice.
Suggested Working Group – Number 1
The main group would be the HPS or Health Improvement Group who would meet and, depending on the agenda, would shift the meeting according to the topic.
Suggested Working Group – Number 2
The HPS or Health Improvement Group would be at the centre of all health developments, with each group feeding into the group and receiving direction from the group.
