Topic and Card Number

At the top of each guidance sheet you will find the topic you are working on and the card number (the card numbers run in numerical order).

Statement
Each guidance sheet also has a copy of a statement relevant to that topic and each topic is colour coded

Management is committed to healthy lifestyles and actively promotes the health and well-being of staff, pupils and parents

CRITERIA

To achieve accreditation you should attempt to complete the criteria listed under each statement.

  • Attention has been given to the development of a common understanding of health
  • Specific opportunities are provided to promote this shared understanding and enhance practice
  • Opportunities are provided to enable staff, pupils and families to examine their attitudes and assumptions about health
  • Individuals are informed about health issues and empowered to take control of their own health by making positive choices
  • CPD opportunities for staff are identified and planned in accordance with the Health Promotion, Health Improvement agenda

This gives some suggestions on what materials you can reference to demonstrate that you are fulfilling the criteria. This is by no means an exhaustive list - please refer to the Evaluation Guide in the Toolkit.

  • Minutes of meetings with staff/parents/support services
  • Summary of staff development opportunities
  • Parental survey

SUGGESTIONS FOR IMPROVEMENT

If you have reviewed the criteria, and feel that you need to improve in this area of health promotion, this section gives possible ideas about how schools can progress this theme.

  • Establish pupil council/forum
  • Regular parental consultation/involvement in school activities, events, health initiatives
  • Workshop/briefings on sensitive issues
  • Use of parent helpers/volunteers
  • Feedback to school board, parents and the wider community on school’s approaches to health promotion

The quality indicators have been added to each piece of guidance to relate the statement to the HMIe Self Evaluation Series, The Health Promoting School.
