In September 2005, we began to collate evidence to be recognised as a Health Promoting School. We decided to work on the areas of Ethos and Environment to start with. The statements we chose also tied in with our work to become an Eco School and allowed us to see the good practice that was already going on in our school. This was very reassuring.
It was very important to us, as a school, that the pupils should be heavily involved in helping to put the evidence together. Therefore, children from the infant, middle and upper stages gave their views on our school building, the playground, pupil council and other pupil related jobs, our healthy tuckshop, school get-togethers and the house championship. These opinions were given in words and pictures.
Here are a few examples:
“
In our Playground we have a special quiet area. It is made out of logs and bark and is really well used.” – Michael, P6.
“
In our reception area we have a trophy cabinet to display our awards for sports championships and other competitions. We are very proud of our trophies and achievements”. – Craig, P6.
“
Our Pupil Council was set up by voting for organised, confident, sensible people who suggest good ideas. They have monthly meetings and improve issues in our school”. – Stuart, P5.
“
I always behave at Mrs Davidson’s Get Together because I got a certificate once for behaving well.” – Amy, P4.
“
Pick of the Week is when you get a certificate from your teacher for working really hard”. – Natasha, P4.
Now our evidence has been compiled for the first two cards we chose to tackle. We are now looking forward to the final part of the project when we will evaluate our practice in terms of Learning and Teaching and Management.
