The SmartBoard 560
Each Smart Board has a software bundle delivered on CD ROM with updates available from www.smarttech.com and UK websites specialising in supporting this particular board. Once bought this software may be installed on all the computers in the purchasing establishment. Notebook files may be created without being connected to the Smart Board.

Smart Boards have proved to be very popular in Fife schools and a growing number of Notebook files are helping to cover a wide age range and have activities for most curricular areas.

Smart Board websites offering additional resources and free downloads include:

Access to the resources is best made from the website's site map. Two examples are:

Great Ideas - Geography (Primary)
Great Ideas - History (Primary)

Treat these direct links as exemplars. Just substitute a different subject (for example science instead of geography) in the web address when you reach the site to view different resources.
Notebook Files - Council Websites:

Birmingham, Cardiff, Oxford and Warrington (added 12th May 2006)
ED CompassActivities

Free SmartBoard Resources from Edcompass - a website established by Smart.

Use the search features to locate content by subject and age range.
Help Sheets & Case Studies (Offline at present (8/12/06), but due to go live again.)

Research conducted at the University of Hull includes Help Sheets and other information.

Case Studies for a range of secondary subjects and primary school use are included.

Frequently Asked Questions

A growing collection of FAQs have been placed in the SmartBoard group on FISH. Here is a taster:

Notebook Questions

Q. How can I use the same page more than once and modify the content?

This is especially useful for work created for different groups in a class.

1. Create the most complex level first and check it is in the order you want.

2. Click on Page Sorter, then the ↓ pull-down menu arrow and choose ‘clone page’.

3. Modify the cloned page to suit and repeat step 2 if needed.

Q. I wish to make multiple copies of an object (image from the gallery or text or shape placed on the work area of the page) but I don’t like going back to the gallery all the time as it makes it slower for my class.

1. Select your object and place it on the page.

2. Click on the object and use the ↓ pull-down menu arrow.

3. Click on Infinite Cloner.

4. Now drag as many copies from the original as you need.

5. Remember to switch off the Infinite Cloner on the original object once you are finished.

You might want to keep the Infinite Cloner on for pupil use. Have a look at pages 6 and 7 of the Notebook Software Activity Guide for a maths and a language activity.
Some Hints and Tips
  • Use large font sizes on prepared pages - stand at the back of your own classroom and check that you can see the text.
  • Spread your work over several pages, rather than trying to squeeze it all onto one page.
  • On the net, use the largest font size setting: in Internet Explorer go to the toolbar > View > Text Size > Largest
  • In Word, expand the size of the word document (e.g. change view to 125% or a size that shows the text clearly across the room.) You could also use a larger font size but this can affect the screen layout and any print-outs so you could try ....
  • Under the View menu select Web layout - now when you increase the zoom to any % the words will always wrap to the screen and you won't have to scroll horizontally
  • To reduce screen glare it is better to switch to a darker background colour. Depending on the colour chosen the text colour might have to be changed to a lighter colour.
  • When looking back from the whiteboard do so from either side of the board as you will be outside the projector's beam.
