| BBC Education - The Bookcase This site contains the latest book news with who's publishing what and when, plus a brief animated history of books. Highlights include a special website devoted to Nancy Mitford's books and, in particular, her novel Love In a Cold Climate. There is a comprehensive section on the BBC television adaptation, which is being currently broadcast, featuring interviews with the cast and crew plus an interactive character tree. There are also features on crime writing, romance, science fiction and awards and prizes in addition to a list of all authors and poets that have been featured within BBC Education's book and literary sites. |
| The Book Trust Founded in 1925, the Book Trust is an independent, educational charity, "booktrusted" to bring books and readers together in Britain today. Their website contains literary information, ideas for creative writing, plus news and history on prizes and awards from the Booker Prize to the Orange Prize for Fiction. In addition, there are details on projects such as "Bookstart" and "Breathtaker" which encourage readers of all ages and cultures to discover and enjoy books. The site explores daily news about books and forthcoming biographies and fiction to be published. There are lists of books for children of different age groups, and events which comprise readings, talks, festivals and book award ceremonies. And finally, don't miss the alphabetical list of websites belonging to the whole spectrum of professional bodies involved with the book industry. |
| The British Library This website contains details on the British Library's extensive collections, whether it be in the form of printed books, newspapers, manuscripts, archives, music, sound recordings, prints, drawings, photographs or stamps. The Library's rich resources include African, British, Dutch/Flemish, German, Hispanic, Italian and Modern Greek, Modern French, Oriental and Indian, Philatelic, Scandinavian and Science, Technology and Business collections; the site is divided alphetically for each of these areas. In addition, there is information on the BL Exhibition Galleries, the growing Digital Library, and the British Library Public Catalogue with its simple search mechanism. There is also a comprehensive website index with an organised listing of all content. |
| The Royal Society of Literature You do not have to be a member of the Society to attend the meetings, lectures and discussions, details of which are listed in this website. There is a section on 'Awards and Prizes', with details only of those awarded by the Royal Society of Literature. There is also information on the 'Companions of Literature' which is an honour given to writers of conspicuous attainment. Finally, there is, of course, information on how to join the Society and an online application form. |
| The Poetry Society Established in 1909, The Poetry Society exists to help poets and poetry thrive in Britain today and membership is open to everyone. Their site contains an education section with special resources for schools including printed resources, downloadable lesson plans, INSET training and a recommended reading list for children. There are also details on National Poetry Day (4 October, 2001), young poet competitions, poetry news and a diverse range of events. These include 'Poetryclass' (a special initiative for schools), screenings at the Poetry Studio, a list of poetry books to be published, the poetry cafe calendar and 'Dinner with Poets' events. |
