Art and Design is both a means of communication and a means of expressing ideas and feelings.
It is an area of study that is especially concerned with the development of those complex mental
processes involved in visual perception and aesthetic experience. The study of art fosters
awareness and encourages pupils to develop critical awareness through the application of
processes and skills related to art and design techniques.
The department comprises of 5 traditional classrooms and one computer studio arranged over 3
floors.
In S1 pupils have 3 periods a week for half of the year rotating with Design Technology.
S2 pupils are timetabled for 2 periods each week throughout the year.
Exam course classes in S3 and S4 are allocated 3 periods a week.
Senior pupils following exam courses are allocated 6 periods a week.
There are no more than 20 pupils in any one class with often smaller numbers in S3/4 exam
course classes. Senior classes will run with 14/15 pupils, of sometimes composite courses when
Higher/Advanced Higher and Intermediate 2/Intermediate 1 pupils are taught together.
There are 4 full time teachers in the art department including a head of department.
