General Information

The department strives to deliver quality teaching for all year groups in Woodmill.  We aim to

prepare young students for further theatre training:  many have gained careers as actors and

lighting and sound technicians.  Many of our ex-students have gained placed at top colleges in the

UK and are working in the profession.  We also embrace a curriculum for excellence by our

students gaining confidence and social skills from their drama studies.  We believe that all

students are creative and the department ethos is to foster a supportive environment to nurture this

creative process.

The department is continually organising theatre visits to local professional theatres and facilitating

workshops by theatre companies.  We believe that this is essential in our students training.  We

provide extra curricular rehearsals in drama and dance and have an annual school show.

Many of our students have had opportunities to perform in professional theatre spaces.  As part of

the Schools Shakespeare Festivals our students have performed at the McRoberts Theatre in

Stirling and The Traverse Theatre in Edinburgh.

The department has 2 full time and 1 part time staff members.

One purpose built drama studio and two rehearsal rooms.

In S2 , Performing Course, pupils have 1 period a week.

In S3-4, Standard Grade and Intermediate 2 pupils have 3 periods a week.

In S5, Higher pupils have 6 periods a week.

In S6, Advanced Higher pupils have 6 periods a week.

ASN pupils following a Foundation Courses have 1 period a week.

The Standard Grade courses build on the S2 course which is an introduction to the skills required

for S3 and S4.  The students will learn about: form and structure, staging, building a character,

voice, movement, theatre arts and working from a script.  There is a strong emphasis on practical

skills and performances which leads to our students’ success.  As students progress into

Intermediate 2 they begin to develop these discrete skills and their devising skills to match the

required level.  The Higher and Advanced Higher students are trained to study and deconstruct

challenging texts, playwrights and practitioners and they prepare for an external acting exam which

is marked by an external examiner.  The standard of performance is as high as in the professional

theatre.
