General Information

In a world which is shrinking every day because of the ease of global communications and

international contacts, it is vital that pupils can speak a language in addition to English.  Pupils

learn either French or German, depending generally on their primary school experience.  The

emphasis in language teaching is on speaking in order that pupils gain fluency and confidence.

However, thorough learning of vocabulary and grammar is essential and the skills of reading,

writing and listening are taught at all stages.

There are 4 classrooms and a staff base.

In S1 and S2 pupils are in classes of approximately 25-30 pupils for three periods a week.

In S3 and S4 class sizes tend to be approximately 25 pupils for three periods a week.

In S5 and S6 Higher classes usually consist of around 10 pupils who attend 6 periods a week.

There are 4 full time teachers of French and German, including a Head of Department.

A Depute Head also teaches in the department.
