In common with most Fife schools, there is a strong tradition of music making in Woodmill High
School. The department aims to provide every pupil with the opportunity to develop their skills in
music not only through formal, certificated study but also through participation in the very broad
range of extra-curricular opportunities on offer. Pupils will study Performing, Composing, and
Listening as well as being encouraged to reach as high a level as possible with their chosen
instruments. Woodmill bands and music groups are regular performers both in the school and in
the wider community.
The department has a large suite of rooms comprising 4 main teaching rooms and 5 practice
rooms. One room is dedicated to a music computer suite comprising 10 computers running
dedicated music software used for composing and midi sequencing.
Music classes have no more than 20 pupils at any stage. S1 and S2 have 1 period of music per
week, S3 and S4 have 3 periods per week and S5/6 have 6 periods per week. The department
offers Intermediate, Higher and Advanced Higher courses from S3-S6, but not Standard Grade.
There are 2 full time class teachers including a Head of Department. 8 Instructors from Fife Council
take pupils for instrumental lessons on piano, woodwind, brass, percussion, upper strings, lower
strings, bass guitar/double bass and guitar.
Individual lessons with instructors are in 25 minute slots and pupils are expected to take part in
weekly rehearsals in a group or ensemble and in concerts. Many go on to participate in Fife Music
activities, including Saturday and Tuesday bands, String Training Orchestra, String Orchestra, Fife
Youth Jazz Orchestra, Concert band and Youth Orchestra. Many also sing with local choirs.
